Moog Space and Defense Group and Alliant Techsystems (ATK) have agreed to partner with ECAPS, a wholly owned subsidiary of Swedish Space Corporation to make a new low-toxicity monopropellant propulsion technology available to the US spacecraft market.
This new technology, developed in Sweden by Chief Engineer Kjell Anflo and the team from ECAPS, has demonstrated a 30% improvement in density specific impulse over current hydrazine technology while meeting long-term stability requirements and offering low personnel toxicity and environmental risks. Rolf Möllerberg, President of ECAPS, said “Our HPGP technology operates virtually in the same way as a current hydrazine and we are scheduled to fly it for the first time on the Prisma satellite mission in June 2009.”
“Moog and ATK are very pleased that we have been selected by ECAPS as partners to introduce and market this important technology to the US,” explained Bart Olson, Vice President and General Manager or ATK’s Tactical Propulsion & Controls Division. “ECAPS has developed this breakthrough technology that promises to substantially simplify servicing and installation of spacecraft propulsion systems. We look forward to providing this technology as part of our portfolio of technology to the Operationally Responsive Space (ORS) marketplace.” Douglas Morash, Group Vice President of Space & Defense Programs at Moog adds “Although our initial concept is to import the thrusters and fuel from Sweden to incorporate into a HPGP system, we are prepared to transfer manufacturing of the Swedes’ technology to US production facilities should the market conditions or our customers dictate. We are ready to deliver propulsion systems to customers for delivery as soon as late 2009.”
